STATEMENT
In my artistic process, I view each painting as a poetic expression inspired by the space between the wind and water, flora and fauna. As I navigate through this free-flowing journey, I seek to merge the abstract with the familiar, creating a sense of mystery within the definite. My current focus revolves around capturing the essence of vulnerability and strength in a state of flow. Beginning with intricate patterns and web-like drips, I gradually build layers of earthy tones and organic shapes, blending fragility with resilience. The finished paintings not only showcase my profound connection to nature, but also reflect the interplay between my vulnerable self and the determination needed to thrive. It's a harmonious dance of art imitating life and life reflecting art.
BIO
Shar Coulson’s organic forms hint at animals, figures, and plant-like references that feel nearly recognizable. At the same time, her lush application of paint plays with contrast as well as a spectrum of tonal shifts. Embracing the essence of Organic Expressionism, her work reflects her love of nature and the human figure. Working from visual memory, Coulson explores the idea of perception versus reality within the allusive figuration, gestural line work and organic forms in her paintings. She lives and works in the Near West Side Market District of Chicago, Illinois, USA and exhibits nationally and internationally.
